WARNER VALLEY / PLUMAS COUNTY — October 30, 2026. Travelers heading toward the Warner Valley section of Lassen Volcanic National Park need to check two separate conditions before setting out: the published 2026 camping season ended October 14, and the access road is not maintained for winter travel. The National Park Service has identified the valley’s 17-site campground as operating with full services from June 16 through October 14, 2026.
That date is the end of the published full-service season, not independently verified proof of the gate or road status at this exact moment. Snowfall can arrive at different times each year. The Park Service advises checking its latest road and facility alerts before travel.
Why Warner Valley is not a simple drive-through
The access route is County Road 312 (Warner Valley Road), entered from the Chester area near California Route 36. The National Park Service describes the approach as roughly 13 miles of partly unpaved road, with steep and rough dirt sections near the end. The agency says the route is not recommended for trailers and is not plowed after winter snowfall.
The road crosses land associated with Plumas County, Lassen National Forest and the national park, so an announcement about one agency’s land does not automatically describe road conditions across the full drive. The park advises avoiding vehicle travel when snow covers the unmaintained section, often approximately November through June.
What campground facilities were available in 2026?
The Park Service lists 17 campsites at the Warner Valley campground, managed by park concessionaire Snow Mountain LLC. Its published price is $21 per standard site, which may change in later seasons. The campground is close to trailheads leading into the geothermal landscapes of Warner Valley. Basic restrooms are available in season; the official campground details list no reliable cell or internet service and limited accessibility.
The stated October 14 end of seasonal service must not be treated as a guarantee that a site is currently available. The National Park Service’s camping information describes some Warner Valley sites as first-come, first-served during their operating season. That rule does not override seasonal closure, posted safety instructions or concessionaire restrictions.
What about Boiling Springs Lake and Devils Kitchen trails?
The park’s trail status page, last updated June 21, 2026 for Warner Valley, lists the Boiling Springs Lake hike at approximately 3 miles round trip and the Devils Kitchen hike at about 4.2 miles round trip. Both traverse areas affected by the 2021 Dixie Fire. NPS cautions that standing dead trees can fall without warning.
Those June trail listings are not an October 30 live report. Early snow, damage or temporary closures can make routes difficult or inaccessible. Hikers should never go beyond barriers or onto unstable geothermal ground, even when the last published summer guide described a trail as passable.
What local residents and visitors should check
Before driving from Chester or surrounding communities, confirm the park’s current conditions, fuel needs, road status, concessionaire campground information and weather forecast. Park visitor services can be contacted at (530) 595-6100, though the NPS warns that telephone lines may be intermittently unavailable.
The difference between a road’s planned seasonal status and its real-time physical accessibility is especially important in remote Warner Valley. An apparently open map route is not evidence that a steep dirt road is safe for a standard car after snowfall.
